Check out George R. R. Martin's series 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. Even if you don't like fantasy, it's got some of the most complex story-weaving I've ever seen. And it's being filmed right now as an HBO show, which is sure to be a hit.

As for art, I'm trying to explore Virginia as much as time and motivation will allow, but this place requires a bit of work to find somewhere interesting.
